Why do pronouns matter?

Why Using Someone's Correct Gender Pronoun Is Important

You will never know someone’s pronoun by simply looking at them. Using someone’s correct personal pronoun shows respect for their gender identity. When you refer to someone using the wrong pronoun, this can cause feelings of exclusion and distress.

By simply using someone’s pronoun correctly, you could make them feel more happier and included, why wouldn’t you do that? Not only does it show a level of respect that every human deserves but it also creates an inclusive environment for them to be themselves and flourish.

Workplaces, schools, the pub, simply everywhere. This NEEDS to be standard practice.

What are gender pronouns?

Traditionally, many languages use binary pronouns and suffixes. For example, he/him/his for men and she/her/hers for women. This binary reference of gender no longer applies to such dated ideologies and we have a broadening understanding of gender identity and expressions.

Non-binary and gender fluid individuals opt to use the pronouns they/their/them to express their gender identity. This is the language which they use to express their gender identity when they do not label themselves one specific gender.

What happens if I use the wrong pronoun?

This can be a challenging conversation and it is okay to be unsure. Having an open and honest discussion can create understanding. After all, education is power. If you use the wrong pronoun it is essential to acknowledge this and apologise.

Going on and on about this mistake is not necessary. It makes the person who has been misgendered feel uncomfortable and responsible for comforting you, which is not their responsibility.

We are all human and life is a process of constantly learning. Having an open mind and a willingness to learn is the right attitude to have in life.

What can we do to create a more inclusive environment?

It is important for everyone to be aware of the importance of using someone’s correct pronouns. Everyone can encourage conversations around gender identity and create an environment of inclusion and acceptance.

Businesses can include gender pronouns in their signatures, name tags, bios and introduction. They can provide training and support where needed. Schools can teach from a young age about equality and diversity and how the world is a much better place if everyone can be who they want to be.

A strict zero tolerance to bullying is imperative in every situation.
